Reading Specialist K-2
Building the foundation for reading is key to future success in reading. Our K-2 Reading specialist instructs within each classroom using research based strategies and curriculum.
Students below grade level in reading receive extra small group instruction based on their reading needs using a variety of researched based strategies which include explicit instruction in phonics, decoding, fluency, comprehension, phonemic awareness, and vocabulary.
All students K-2 are assessed using DIBELS (Dynamic Indication of Basic Early Literacy Skills) and parents are notified of their child’s current level of skills multiple times throughout the year. The data is used to meet the needs of all students and clearly communicate those needs to parents. Frequent conferences are held with families of struggling readers to support the learning needs and work as a team.
The Reading Specialist will assist parents, teachers and students who are on Service Learning Plans to ensure plans are up-to-date and that accommodations are recorded, modified when necessary and supported in the classroom. She will also work with parents to apply for such services if deemed necessary.
